Description

Delicious Thai beef rice paper rolls filled with fresh herbs and vegetables, perfect for an appetizer or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • 2 cloves Garlic (Minced or sliced)
  • 1 medium Shallot (Can be replaced with onion)
  • 1 pound Ground Beef (85/15) (Substitute with leaner beef or plant-based options)
  • 3 tablespoons Soy Sauce (Tamari is gluten-free)
  • 2 tablespoons Oyster Sauce (A plant-based version can be used)
  • 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar (Honey or maple syrup can be used)
  • 1 tablespoon Lime Juice (Can substitute with lemon juice)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chili Flakes/Thai Chili (Adjust based on spice tolerance)
  • 1 cup Thai Basil (Use regular basil if unavailable)
  • 10 sheets Rice Paper Wrappers (Vietnamese-style wrappers preferred)
  • 1 cup Fresh Herbs (Mint, Cilantro) (Customize based on taste preferences)
  • 1 cup Vegetables (Carrots, Cucumbers) (Julienne for better texture)
  • 1/2 cup Dipping Sauce (Soy-Lime or Chili-Garlic) (Prepare to taste for extra flavor)

Instructions

  1. Start by heating vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and shallot, sautéing until fragrant and golden, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until it’s no longer pink, ensuring it’s thoroughly browned, which should take about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, and chili flakes. Allow the mixture to simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef.
  4. Remove from heat and finish with fresh lime juice and chopped Thai basil. Let the mixture cool slightly before rolling.
  5. Set up a shallow plate with warm water to soak the rice paper wrappers.
  6. Submerge one rice paper wrapper in the warm water for about 5-10 seconds, until it’s just pliable.
  7. Add a small amount of the beef filling near the bottom third of the wrapper. Layer fresh herbs and julienned vegetables if desired.
  8. Fold the bottom over the filling, tuck in the sides, and roll tightly to seal.
  9. Continue the rolling process with the remaining wrappers and filling. Slice each in half diagonally for serving.
  10. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!

Notes

  • Substitute vegetable oil with sesame oil for added flavor.
  • Customize the fresh herbs based on your taste preferences.
  • Adjust the chili flakes based on your spice tolerance.
  • Julienne vegetables for better texture.
  • The dipping sauce can be prepared to taste for extra flavor.
