Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (or whole milk)
- 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
- Gel food coloring, optional (1-2 drops per color)
Instructions
- Beat the softened butter with a hand mixer until smooth and creamy.
- Add the heavy cream, peppermint extract, vanilla, and salt and beat until fully combined.
- Gradually mix in the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, until a soft, dough-like mixture forms that no longer sticks to your fingers.
- Divide the dough into portions and tint each one with gel food coloring as desired.
- Roll each portion into thin 1/2-inch ropes on a lightly powdered-sugar-dusted surface.
- Cut the ropes into small pillow-shaped pieces and arrange them on parchment-lined baking sheets.
- Let the butter mints dry at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours, or until firm to the touch.
- Transfer the set mints to an airtight container for storage.
Notes
- Make sure to sift the powdered sugar to avoid lumps in your mixture.
- These mints can be colored to match any occasion.
- Store in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
